A new English study is being published today in The Lancet about that the use of hormone replacement therapy (HTR) by women, increases risk of ovarian cancer. This study attributes 1,000 extra ovarian cancer deaths in the UK since 1991 to HRT. Those who were treated for at least five years, were on average 23% more likely to die of ovarian cancer than those who had never used HRT.

For every 1,000 HRT users, 1.6 women died compared with 1.3 non-users. This amounted to one extra ovarian cancer death in roughly 3,300 users, said Valerie Beral, MBBS, of the Cancer Research United Kingdom Epidemiology Unit.

Not only HRT affects ovarian cancer, Dr. Beral said, but it also affects the risk of breast and endometrial cancer.  In total, these three cancers account for 39% of all cancers in women in Britain. Read the rest of this entry »

America is reeling in shock from the recent tragedy on the Virginia Tech campus, where a single gunman – known to be a recluse with a strong interest in violence – took the lives of 32 innocent people before committing suicide.

The tragedy has also become political, with different factions coming up with ways to avoid similar slaughters in the future.  Everything from banning violent computer games to tighter gun control laws has been suggested and debated.

What few politicians seem to be promoting is the most obvious answer:  that a multi-pronged approach is needed to fight these incidences in the future.

Tighter gun control is a clear and obvious step, though one distasteful to many Americans, as well as to the incredibly rich and powerful pro-gun lobby.  Taking guns off the street, and making it far more difficult for young people to obtain such weapons, will be a barrier to crimes like this one.  More guns on school campuses is definitely not what American universities need.  And while it’s true that criminals will have an easier time getting guns in the short term, a scarcity of weapons will have a long-term effect on them as well.

But gun control is not the only answer.  There also needs to be a better program in place to identify depressed young people and to give them the help that they need.  Teachers were warning the school about Cho Seung-hui’s alarming behaviour long before the shootings – but no one could, or would, do anything about it. After years of tempestuous storms, bizarre temperatures, and overwhelming natural disasters, not to mention a sternly-worded rebuke from actual scientists, the governments of the world have finally gotten together and admitted that perhaps they should do something about global climate changes.

The forum has stated that it is “without doubt” that mankind is influencing climate change, and has outlined a plan to reduce global greenhouse emissions to improve the environment.  This agreement is non-binding, but politicians say that they believe that it indicates a real change in thinking about the environment.

To me, the debate is pretty clear.  The climate is changing, and if it continues to do so, there will be a serious impact for all of us.  Rising sea levels, droughts and floods, ruined harvests, and animals bereft of natural habitat can already be seen.

If humanity is not having an impact on the change, then there is little to nothing we can do about it:  we’re doomed.  But if our disregard for the environment is speeding the climate changes, then we can slow down, or even stop altogether, the disaster that is looming just ahead.  To me, the only sensible course is to take action.

Lindsay Lohan showed up to DJ AM's birthday party at club LAX over the weekend acting like her usual self. That practically means she showed up, got drunk and behaved like a whore in heat! Everyone was trying to nap and she was nudging them awake ‘Look what I can do!€� I’m actually humoring her by writing this article, because she obviously needs the attention! And I pity her, and don’t want to push her into depression, as that would mean even more stupid behavior on her part and that would just be an overload! So I hope others will follow my example and make fun of her, just for the sake of giving her what she wants!

Natasha Lyonne, the girl from ‘American pie’, the one who a while ago threatened to molest a dog, showed up to the LA premiere of ‘Grindhouse’ dressed in what appears to be a plastic garbage bag! If you ask me, she needs a much bigger one, to cover her face and the rest of her body! I mean nature has been really harsh on that girl! If I looked like that I’d also appreciate sex with a dog. And the need to molest is also understandable, as no living being with the gift of sight would willingly have sex with her! I’m sorry honey, if you were the normal amount of ugly I wouldn’t make fun of you! I’d realize you’re sensitive about it, and I’d let it slide! But as it is, I have a moral duty to underline how much of a crime it is for you to come out in daylight! And I’m not even gonna bother telling you how inappropriately evil it is for you to pose for pictures! Please, just, stai in the house or… kill yourself!

Courtney Love showed off her newly slimmed body in Maui, Hawaii after losing a reported 45 lbs. Yet she is still among the last people I’d want to see in a bikini! This woman just can’t get a clue! I mean, she’s not really that famous! The first time I ever heard of her was on an Eminem track, which isn’t really flattering! She keeps giving everybody reasons to criticize, and… I just don’t like her! I genuinely detest her in every possible way! The mere sound of her name, her bad tastes in… practically everything, her defining state, it all makes me hurl so bad I just want to stick my finger through my eye, into my brain, pull it out covered in goo, just so I’d have something prettier to look at! Still the fantasy of something to distract me from her devilish appearance is so lost among all my other more realizable dreams, like curing cancer, that I almost forget about it from time to time!
