In 1958, director Stanley Kramer released the greatest film of his career. ‘The Defiant Ones’ tells the story of two escaped convicts shackled together. But the story really begins to get interesting when we learn more about the characters.

John ‘Joker’ Jackson is a racist and being chained to black Noah Cullen is not his idea of a perfect situation. During the first half an hour of the movie you become increasingly convinced that the two men will end up killing one another. There are several tense moments, but after a while, they learn to be tolerant. They must co-operate to some degree or they will be caught by the authorities who are steadily hunting them down. And so begins an uneasy friendship…

‘The Defiant Ones’ is a brilliant character study. Tony Curtis does a marvellous job of playing the embittered ‘Joker’ and Sidney Poitier is excellent in his role of Noah. The movie’s other actors are all first rate. Lon Chaney Jr puts in a great appearance as ‘Big’ Sam and Theodore Bikel is perfect in the part of the Sheriff, Max Muller.

For its time, the film was pretty controversial stuff. America was still over fifty years away from its first black President and ignorance still ruled in many of its states.

This is one of those old films that is always a welcome sight when it comes on television. It takes the subject of racism and examines it in a thorough and straightforward manner. By the time it gets to the end, ‘Joker’ wouldn’t be able to say why he had ever had a dislike for Noah. The film makes us realise just how dumb it is to be intolerant of different skin colours.

‘The Defiant Ones’ is wonderful, timeless movie that can still teach us many important lessons.

Final thing I really need to inform you about the extraordinary art show that I saw in Angel over the weekend, it was essentially a white hall with loads of shutters in it. Very interesting!
